I woke up excited. “This is it! This is the last day of the excessive heat warning!” I eagerly went to interpret the forecast, and felt defeated. The heat warning now stretches through Thursday. We’ve been doing this a full week now. And not only that, but Wednesday’s highs are projected at 101°F in Downtown LA, making it even hotter than Tuesday. Does it always get worse before it gets better?
So the sun continues to be unrelenting, and I continue to tell you to be most active before 9 AM and 7 PM, when temperatures are at least in the 80’s and 70’s. Our low on Wednesday will reach around 73°F. I’m not looking forward to my electric bill, which is logging every second of my portable A/C unit’s use, and I’m curious to see how much money I am spending on hot-but-tolerable indoor air. A historic late season heatwave in California could lead to black outs across the state as electricity demand skyrockets. According to the California Independent System Operator, which manages the majority of the states electricity, demand could break all time records Tuesday afternoon.
On Monday, highs across the state surpasses 100°F in the Bay Area. The national weather service issued an excessive heat warning that is expected to last through Thursday, with highs up to 116°F. In order to avoid rolling blackouts similar to the devastating ones from 2020, state officials are calling on residents to reduce the use of electricity and to keep air conditions at 78°F or higher.
