Big storms on the west coast bring rain all weekend

It’s a good time to catch up on that stack of books gathering dust on your nightstand, because we’re getting rain until Sunday. The majority of precipitation comes during the night, so make sure your Friday and Saturday evenings are extra cozy. I know it’s only going to be about 50°F at night, but I’m imagining long underwear and wool socks and three layers of comforters lulling me to sleep while I’m only 10 pages into my book.

But before you get too comfortable, enjoy the rainy mornings and misty afternoons. Gloomy skies will keep highs in the low- to mid-60’s all weekend, with Saturday the warmest day at 66°F and Sunday much cooler at 61°F. Rain might start and stop intermittently throughout the day. I suggest staying off the roads if you can, as this prolonged rain is going to turn them into a mess.

Happy Meteorological Winter!

Your calendar may say the season starts Dec. 21st, which is called Astronomical Winter, but for meterologists and climatologists, Dec. 1st marks the beginning of Meteorological Winter — the coldest three months of the year in the Northern Hemisphere.

NOAA uses these climatological seasons to make record-keeping more meaningful. Astronomical seasons change from year to year as they’re based on sun angles and solstices and equinoxes can fall on different dates. But, meteorological seasons stick to calendar months each year.

Dec. 1st is usually when winter-like weather starts as well, so bundle up! And if you’re in a snowy area, stay tuned for forecasts of any possible snowy systems.
