The weather, currently.

Thick clouds subdue temperatures today

Some No Sky July filtered in the sky on Wednesday, despite my forecast, but Thursday’s skies really should be free of the marine layer’s gloom. You’ll still have overcast skies today, but instead, it’s coming from an onshore flow that’s pushing a low layer of clouds into the sky. Despite highs of 82°F, it should feel relatively cool for this time of year, almost like June weather has recycled into the atmosphere. Have you been in LA long enough to pick up on the subtleties of our non-seasons? If you’ve been born and raised here, sorry for daring to suggest you may be a transplant.

Clouds will persist, blanketing the evening sky, and temperatures will hang around in the 70’s until about sunset. Late night lows will fall to about 63°F.

We have a new story up today from Anna Abraham on the efforts of the Chilean people to reclaim the country’s water supply from the extractive industries and other private enterprises.

“Climate change plays a significant role in the matter,” writes Abraham. “But so does the country’s free-market water policy, which inadvertently prioritizes the needs of extractive industries over a community’s right to access water.”

“They stole everything from us, they even took away our dignity,” Zoila Quiroz, a local resident from Petorca, Chile told EFE, “There was a time when we had to choose whether to take a shower or wash our clothes. We had no choice but to fight.”
