A sunny weekend with normal temperatures

The weather has reset just in time for a solid Los Angeles weekend. Highs reach the mid-80’s on Friday and Saturday, and Sunday will be a notch cooler with highs around 82°F. Skies will remain mostly clear, giving you straight views of the fig trees and raptors flying overhead on your weekend hike through Griffith Park.

You should enjoy this weekend as much as you can, because another warming trend is on the horizon, and we’re entering fire season. You’ll get a taste of what to expect with strong, dry winds in the evening, though they aren’t the blazing Santa Ana’s that bring danger with them. Evening temperatures will hover in the mid-60s. Squeeze in a few more summer barbecues before the breezes turn sinister.

Pets, according to a new study in PLOS Climate, are often overlooked victims in natural disasters. Researchers looked at data from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and Shelter Animals Count (SAC) and found that the number of dogs and cats in shelters was still significantly higher up to a year after a major natural disaster, like hurricanes and wildfires.

Failure to account for pets in emergency management plans may endanger humans as well. According to the study, during Hurricane Irene pet owners evacuated at a lower rate than those who did not own pets — of pet owners who didn’t evacuate, 51 percent said they were unable to find adequate shelter for their pets.
